New Nouveau, a touch to heritage – high end renovation classical 1906 mansion in the Statenkwartier in The Hague
The design concept consists of adding functional interior elements without detracting from the classic details present. These elements meet the functional needs of the residents and give the interior the desired look and feel.

Materialisation
Natural materials such as steel, copper, brass, walnut and oak, concrete stucco, various ceramic and natural stone tiles and the original red brick from 1906 were exposed. A pallet of calm Provençal colours and respect for the classic details already present complete the interior design.

Functional tour
In the entrance hall, a vibrant herringbone tile is combined with original marble panelling and a newly designed dark walnut wardrobe, which also conceals the electrical meter.
The existing vestibule has been painted in a Provencal green.
The wall in the stairwell has been completely exposed in the original red brick. The playful positioning of sconces accentuates the whimsical character of the brick wall.
Along the stairs, the wall is lined with vertical wooden slats of walnut. As a result, the doors to the basement, toilet and storage room disappear into the wall.
The three doors in the corridor have been raised to the same height as the partition doors and replaced by copper-coloured steel doors with a classic design befitting the mansion.

The kitchen has an open connection to the back room where the dining and playroom sits. The kitchen island of walnut with alcoves for cookbooks provides a warm homely connecting element between the different functions.
The back wall of the kitchen is also exposed with the original red warm brick from 1906. Against this are two elements, both uniquely materialised. The tall fridge is brass and the low section with the sink has the same material as the kitchen island, walnut with a beige stone composite top. The sink has the same material as the composite top, making it sink into the kitchen worktop.

In the playroom, a custom-designed cabinet has been installed with a Hungarian point. This suits the clients’ desire to quickly and easily hide away their two children’s toys. This cupboard stands against a once again chipped brick back wall. This creates connection and unity in the interior design.

The cupboard doors in the partition wall between the front and back room are raised on both sides to the same height as the existing sliding doors. In a playful way, these closed cupboard doors add character to the rooms. The entire separation is painted in the same Provençal green as the vestibule.

In the front room, a luxurious fireplace was designed with a wall unit of walnut and concrete stucco. This combined with the lighting design of integrated LED strips gives atmosphere and warmth to the sitting area.

The master bedroom has an ensuite walk-in wardrobe with dark walnut doors. The back wall where the bed is located is of dink walnut slats and integrated bedside cabinets with both closed and open cupboards.

The ensuite bathroom in New Nouveau is accessed by a steel door with ribbed glass 3 metres high. The bathroom is characterised by a chipped back wall with red brick, natural stone and custom-made interior furniture made of walnut and oak in different patterns.

In addition to this bathroom, the house has 3 more bathrooms and 3 separate toilets which are all uniquely materialised, so one gets a unique interior experience in every room in the house again and again using natural contemporary materials befitting the classic 1906 mansion.

All this resulted in a high-quality high-end renovation and interior design of a classic mansion in the Statenkwartier district of The Hague. A 1906 mansion in the middle of The Hague’s Statenkwartier has been completely converted to a contemporary interior design without losing sight of the house’s classic characteristic elements.
The result is a New Nouveau living experience that combines the ideals of the early 20th century bourgeoisie with pure modern and industrial design elements, crowned by a comfortable indoor climate through the application of sustainable building principles.
