Scandinavian holiday home Roelofarendsveen | Situated in the village of Roelofarendsveen, roughly 10 km from Leiden, in South of Holland, This Scandinavian inspired holiday home is a free standing dwelling accompanied with a tiny house. It is a new project designed by Global Architects.
Program and Function | This dwelling , is conceptualized by archetype shape of a house, and open floor plan. There is a separation between the dry and wet areas. The kitchen plays a central role in the layout of the ground floor, and acts as a buffer between the dining area and the living room. There is a direct access to the garden outside. Large openings ensure that is a strong transparency between the inside and outside. The upper storey consists of a central hallway that connects the two bedrooms. Additionally, voids in the first floor contribute to better vertical connections on the inside, both visual and functional. Strategically placed voids create a vertical relationship between the two storeys, all the while maintaining a simplistic layout. The tiny house is placed adjacent to the main volume. It consists of one living room, consisting of a toilet, a multi-purpose zone, and a bed placed an elevated element, which is accessible by a ladder.

Materialization | This project finds a diverse selection of material, inspired from the Scandinavian region. The exterior is cladded in a warm grey plaster. The interior is kept simple and without any finishes. Likewise, the interior space has a strong identity with its exposed sand-lime brick walls, and floors, which is contrasted by exposed wooden beams, and staircase. The separation of dry and wet areas is characterized by wooden cladding. The windows have a light wooden frame and shutters. The roof is made of zinc, which is notable for the formation of patina on its surface over time.
Sustainability | Sustainable principles are a crucial part of Global Architects’ designs. The installation of a air heatpump ensures that adequate temperature is maintained in both winters and summers. The large openings are catered to maximizing daylight. PV Panels are added to the roof. Addition operable roof windows allows together with voids placed in the first floor, allow for stack ventilation to occur, improving the inner air quality.
