EMMA “renovate instead of moving” – Several years ago, apartment owner Margje, living on Koningin Emmakade in The Hague, faced an important decision: move to a new home or renovate the apartment she had lived in for over 10 years. She chose the latter, and with the help of Global Architects, her historic top-floor apartment from 1906 was fully renovated to meet modern comfort standards while maintaining a style that reflects her personal taste.
Initial Condition
Margje purchased the apartment in 2014 and, aside from updating the kitchen, had made few changes to the home. In 2024, she asked Global Architects to create a comprehensive new design. The main goal was to fully renovate the apartment while preserving its classical character and blending it seamlessly with modern design elements.

Design Approach
Global Architects first developed two layout options for the apartment. The focus was on creating a greater sense of openness and functionally integrating part of the hallway into the living spaces. The design was crafted like a bespoke suit, with striking interior elements that give the apartment a unique identity and a refined spatial experience.
