EMMA

EMMA

EMMA is a sustainable full renovation project in The Hague.

An apartment owner living in a beautiful top-floor apartment from 1906 in The Hague faced a decision a few years ago: move to a new home or renovate the apartment she had already lived in for over 10 years. She chose the latter, and with the help of Global Architects, her current home was completely renovated to meet the comfort of modern living while perfectly reflecting her own style and character.

The apartment owner had purchased the apartment in 2014 and, apart from updating the kitchen, had done little renovation work. In 2024, she asked Global Architects to create a new design for her home. The main design principles were to fully renovate the apartment while preserving the classical style of the house and combining it with more modern elements.

First, Global Architects created two layout options for the apartment. The main goal was to enhance the sense of openness and to functionally incorporate part of the hallway into the design. The layout was crafted like a bespoke suit, featuring striking interior elements that give identity and character to the overall interior experience.

The bathroom was enlarged by incorporating part of the hallway into it. Sliding doors make it possible to give the floor plan either a more open or closed character. With oak wooden doors featuring glass panels in a classic-modern grid pattern, the hallway and study are connected to both the front and back rooms. All of this enhances the openness and spatial experience of the design.

Furthermore, the EMMA residence has been fully modernized for sustainability. The roof and walls of the top-floor apartment have been insulated to a high standard, comparable to current new-build requirements, and the home has been fitted with underfloor heating. A new folding façade leading to the roof terrace not only improves the home’s energy performance but also allows the rear room to be seamlessly connected to the terrace.
