The Folded House in Utrecht is a remarkable renovation project that revitalized an existing 1900’s house in the Vogelbuurt, situated in the heart of Utrecht. Originally occupying a ground floor space within a former worker’s house, the property spanned 60 m2. The architectural concept focused on crafting a minimalist and tranquil dwelling, seamlessly blending the owners’ belongings with innovative and dynamic spaces.

The program of Folded House Utrecht involved an extension to accommodate a central kitchen and a new folded roof integrated into the existing structure. The materials selected for the renovation imbue the interior with a soft and inviting ambiance, and strategically placed skylights illuminate the space, starting from the dining area and extending to the rear.
The renovation
During the renovation, the existing conservatory, which was dilapidated and causing water damage, was carefully removed and replaced with a modern extension that elegantly merged with the existing house.

An open kitchen was thoughtfully positioned at the center of the space, serving as both a functional hub and a gateway to the rear garden.
The renovation was underpinned by a commitment to sustainability, with the following measures implemented:
–Post-insulation of walls, roof, and ground floor to enhance energy efficiency.
–Installation of new frames featuring double glazing HR++ to improve insulation.
–Integration of a mechanical ventilation system in wet areas and the kitchen to promote air quality.
–Usage of LED lighting to reduce energy consumption.

The clients, Pierre and Wouter, expressed their satisfaction with the renovation process and outcome. Engaging in remote discussions during the pandemic, the idea for the renovation emerged when neighbors noticed the potential of the backyard.
